So it's fair to wonder what the word actually means anymore.

Since we raise more than 200 Suri alpacas here on our Hudson Valley farm, we get asked this question all the time: Is alpaca really a sustainable fiber?

Our answer is yes but probably not for the reasons you usually hear.

Living with alpacas every day gives you a different perspective. You notice the small things that don't always make it into product descriptions. You watch them gently graze across the fields without tearing up the grass. You see how naturally clean and beautiful their fleece is each spring. And you learn that sustainability isn't about making bold claims, it's about respecting the animals, caring for the land, and creating something that's meant to last.

That's why we love alpaca so much.

One of the things people are often surprised to learn is that alpacas are incredibly gentle on the land.

Take a walk through our pastures and you'll notice they move differently from many other farm animals. Instead of hard hooves, they have soft, padded feet that are kind to the soil. It may seem like a small detail, but over time it helps protect the fields they call home.

They also graze gently. Rather than pulling grass out by the roots, alpacas simply nibble the tops, allowing the plants to keep growing naturally.

Watching our herd every day reminds us that sustainability doesn't always come from new technology. Sometimes it's simply nature doing what it was designed to do.

When people talk about sustainability, the conversation usually focuses on how something is made.

That's important, of course.

But we think there's another part of the story that's just as important: how long you actually use it.

Think about your favorite blanket. Chances are it isn't your favorite because it was trendy. It's your favorite because year after year, it's still the one you reach for on chilly mornings, movie nights, or quiet weekends with a cup of coffee.

That's exactly what we hope our alpaca throws become.

Alpaca fiber is naturally soft, warm, and incredibly durable. When you invest in a well-made piece, you're buying something that can stay with you for years instead of seasons.

To us, that's what sustainability looks like.

Another thing we appreciate about alpaca is how naturally efficient it is.

Compared with many other fiber-producing animals, alpacas generally need fewer resources, including less feed and water, and they produce lower methane emissions than sheep or goats.

Their fleece also contains very little lanolin, so it usually requires less intensive cleaning before it's spun into yarn.

None of this makes alpaca perfect. Every natural fiber still needs to be processed, woven, and transported.

But when you put all those pieces together, it's easy to see why alpaca has earned its reputation as one of the most thoughtful choices for people who care about quality and the environment.

One of the biggest differences between Alicia Adams Alpaca and many brands is that we don't simply source fiber, we raise the animals ourselves.

We're a family-owned business, and we're involved throughout the journey, from caring for our herd to designing the finished pieces that become part of your home.

Each spring, our alpacas are gently shorn once a year to keep them comfortable as the weather warms. Their fleece is carefully sorted, and only the finest baby alpaca fibers are selected for our collections because exceptional softness and lasting quality begin at the source.

The fiber is then gently cleaned before being spun into luxurious yarn and dyed in our signature palette of more than 100 custom colors. From there, skilled artisans in South America knit and weave every piece by hand using fair-trade practices, bringing generations of craftsmanship to every throw, blanket, scarf, and accessory.

It's what we call our farm-to-finish philosophy.
